Manhole Covers – Access Covers
Civilcast Composite Manhole Covers, part of Civilcast's Cast Iron Covers range, are access covers for stormwater, sewer, gas and other utility access points, using a 4-point fixing system and manufactured to meet Australian Standards. Construction combines the durability of cast iron with the lighter weight and corrosion resistance of composite materials, across a range of cover sizes and load ratings suited to everything from light-duty pedestrian areas to heavy-duty vehicular traffic zones. Round covers (the format most commonly seen on streets) require less material than an equivalent square cover and are easier to handle, while preventing accidental fall-through by design. Surface texture is added to improve traction and reduce slip risk, and the same composite/cast iron range extends to inspection covers and sewer encasements.
Features
Civilcast Composite Manhole Covers are built from a hybrid of cast iron and composite materials, combining the durability of one with the lighter weight and corrosion resistance of the other. A 4-point fixing system, a choice of round or square formats, and a range of sizes and load ratings let the cover be matched to the access point — see choosing a grate or lid class for how to match load class to the application.

Benefits
The format and surface choices on these covers are mostly about reducing risk and cost on site: easier handling lowers manual handling injury risk for crews, a round format can cost less in material than an equivalent square cover, and added surface texture reduces slip-related incidents around the cover — see why Australian Standards compliance matters for sign-off.
- Easier handling reduces manual handling injury risk for installation and maintenance crews
- Choosing a round format where possible can lower material cost versus an equivalent square cover
- Improved traction reduces slip-related incidents in pedestrian and vehicle areas around the cover
Applications
These covers are used across stormwater, sewer, gas and other utility access points, with sizing and load ratings that scale from light-duty pedestrian areas through to heavy-duty vehicular traffic zones. The same composite and cast iron range also extends to inspection chamber covers and sewer encasements, giving consistent specification across related access points on the same site.
- Stormwater, sewer and gas utility access points
- Light-duty pedestrian areas to heavy-duty vehicular zones
- Inspection chamber and sewer encasement access

FAQ's
Mainly cost and safety. A round cover uses less material than an equivalent square one, is easier for crews to handle on site, and can't fall through its own opening at any angle the way a mishandled square cover could.
