Steel Checker Plates
Civilcast Steel Checker Plate Covers are part of Civilcast's galvanised steel grate range, featuring a raised diamond pattern on one face and a flat, featureless reverse, used for pit and tank openings that don't need to be lockable. The raised pattern adds grip, reducing slip risk in industrial, commercial and automotive settings where the cover is walked or driven over. Covers are manufactured at a 50mm depth to suit the rebate of Civilcast's pit range, dropping in as a flush-finish lid rather than sitting proud of the surrounding surface, and are Global Mark Certified. For drainage-critical locations, checker plates are often paired with weep holes RHS to improve water flow around the cover.
Features
Civilcast Steel Checker Plate Covers combine galvanised steel construction with a raised checker pattern to provide a practical, non-lockable solution for pit and tank openings. The pattern is designed specifically for grip in settings where the cover is regularly walked or driven over, and the certification confirms the cover meets recognised manufacturing standards. If you’re unsure whether a grate or a lid suits your opening, see Civilcast’s guide on choosing between a grate or lid.

Benefits
Steel Checker Plate Covers address three practical concerns on site: slip risk, trip hazards and unnecessary cost. Combining a slip-resistant surface with a flush fit and a simpler, non-lockable design helps reduce both safety incidents and ongoing maintenance overhead.
- Lowers the risk of slip-related injury claims on surfaces that are regularly walked or driven over
- A flush, level fit with compatible pits avoids trip hazards and keeps surrounding surfaces tidy
- Skipping a lockable mechanism keeps cost down on openings that don’t need secured access
Applications
Steel Checker Plate Covers are commonly used across industrial and commercial flooring, automotive workshops and general pit or tank opening covers where a durable, slip-resistant surface is needed but secured locking isn’t required. In drainage-critical locations, they’re often installed alongside weep holes RHS to help manage water flow around the opening.
- Industrial and commercial flooring
- Pit and tank opening covers
- Automotive workshop settings

FAQ's
No, they're a fixed-plate option for openings that don't need secured access. Where a pit or tank does need to be locked, Civilcast's cast iron covers offer a lockable alternative.
They're sized to suit Civilcast's own precast concrete pit range. If you're working with another manufacturer's pit, check compatibility before ordering.
