Custom Road Pits
Civilcast's Custom Road Pits are solid-wall precast concrete pits engineered to Class D load ratings for council roads, highways and other heavy-traffic civil works, built to meet both local council requirements and Australian Standards. Pit sizes run from 450mm x 450mm up to 1540mm x 700mm in the standard range, with custom depths to 2000mm, wall thicknesses of 110mm, 120mm or 150mm, and matching pit risers, selected through Civilcast's interactive product selector. Shop drawings and a compliance pack are available to support council and road-authority approvals. Road Pits are commonly specified alongside box culverts and headwall security grates on the same civil works project.
Features
Civilcast Custom Road Pits are cast as a solid wall, in a size and depth range built around Class D loading, so the same pit family covers everything from a standard council road to heavier industrial traffic. Wall thickness and depth are configurable per pit size, with pit risers available where additional depth is needed after installation.

Benefits
Designing to Class D from the outset means a Road Pit doesn’t need to be re-specified if a project’s expected traffic load turns out heavier than first planned, which avoids a late redesign during council review. Having shop drawings and a compliance pack ready alongside the pit also shortens the approvals cycle, since the documentation an assessor needs is already prepared rather than requested after submission.
- Class D rating covers most council and road-authority load requirements without re-specifying
- Solid wall construction reduces the risk of cracking under heavy or repeated traffic loads
- Shop drawings and compliance documentation speed up council and road-authority approvals
- Configurable depth and wall thickness avoid forcing a project into one fixed pit size
Applications
Custom Road Pits are specified for civil works carrying regular heavy traffic: highways, council roads, subdivisions, industrial sites and carparks. The same configurable pit range suits new road construction and retrofits where an existing pit needs to be upgraded to meet a higher load class.
- Highways and council roads
- Subdivisions and residential developments
- Industrial sites and carparks
- Road and infrastructure upgrade projects
FAQ's
Mainly for council and road-authority projects, where an assessor needs to see the load rating and construction documentation before signing off. A private installation outside that approval process may not need the full pack.
Yes, these pits can be manufactured to plan, including custom sizes, depths, and penetration layouts. Submit plans and we’ll advise the best configuration.
Class D is typically used for heavy-traffic environments. Share your project context and authority requirements and we’ll confirm suitability and documentation.
We can provide shop drawings, product data/spec sheets and supporting documentation to assist engineering review and authority approvals.
Yes, compatible lids/grates and risers are available. We’ll recommend options based on load class and site conditions.
