Precast Concrete Box Culverts

Precast Concrete Box Culverts

Civilcast's precast concrete box culverts carry water beneath roads, railways and other infrastructure, giving stormwater and floodwater a defined path through an embankment instead of over it. They're available across a wide range of spans and heights, each unit cast with lifting anchors and options for ferrules, pipe penetrations and cast-in openings to suit project-specific requirements. Civilcast is an RMS Approved Supplier and manufactures to AS1597, with an in-house design team for custom configurations. Box culverts are often paired with headwall security grates at the inlet/outlet to control access, and with link slabs as inverted culverts where electrical pits or cables need to cross underneath.

Features

Civilcast box culverts are precast off-site for consistent quality, then delivered with lifting anchors already cast in so each unit can be positioned without additional site fabrication. The range covers small culverts through to large spans, with customisation options (ferrules, pipe penetrations, cast-in openings) available where a standard size doesn’t fit the application.

  • Wide range of standard spans and heights, small to large
  • Lifting anchors cast into every unit
  • Customisable: ferrules, pipe penetrations, cast-in openings
  • Manufactured to AS1597
  • RMS Approved Supplier
  • In-house design team for custom culvert solutions

Benefits

Precasting box culverts off-site means each unit reaches the same strength and dimensional accuracy before it leaves the yard, rather than depending on a site pour curing correctly in variable weather. RMS approval and AS1597 compliance also reduce the back-and-forth on council and road-authority approvals, since the standards documentation is already in place. The case for precast over in-situ concrete covers this trade-off in more depth.

  • Off-site casting gives consistent strength and dimensions across units
  • Cast-in lifting anchors reduce site handling time and equipment needs
  • AS1597 compliance and RMS approval simplify council/road-authority sign-off
  • Custom openings and penetrations avoid redesigning the culvert around services

Applications

Box culverts are specified wherever water needs to pass under load-bearing infrastructure: road and rail crossings, stormwater drainage and flood management channels, and bridge or platform construction where the culvert also carries structural load. Inverted culverts with link slabs extend the same product into electrical infrastructure projects, protecting cables and electrical pits where they need to run beneath a road or yard.

  • Road and rail drainage crossings
  • Stormwater drainage and flood management
  • Bridge and platform load-bearing applications
  • Inverted culverts for electrical pit and cable protection

FAQ's

AS1597. Civilcast is also an RMS Approved Supplier, which is relevant for any culvert installed as part of a state road project.

Yes. Ferrules, pipe penetrations and cast-in openings can be specified, and Civilcast's in-house design team can develop a custom configuration where a standard span and height don't suit the application.

Box culverts are versatile structures commonly used for stormwater drainage, flood management, and supporting bridge or platform construction. They ensure efficient water flow and provide stable foundations for heavy loads.

Precast box culverts offer faster installation, lower maintenance, and cost-effective solutions compared to other culvert types. Their durability and customisability make them ideal for diverse applications.

Box culverts provide efficient water management, reduce flood risks, and are easy to install. Their robust design ensures reliable performance in high-capacity drainage systems.
