STANDARD AND CUSTOM ELECTRICAL PITS FOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

When it comes to running electrical components underground for infrastructure projects, electrical pits will be used in a number of locations such as carparks, streetscapes, industrial sites and airports.

Not only do they come in a variety of standard sizes, you can also opt for a custom made solution.  Each project is going to come with its own set of requirements which must be compliant prior to asset acceptance, prior to the insertion of new conduit to a pit, prior to the haul of new cable through the pit and / or prior to commissioning new services through the pit.

We’re here to help you by providing electrical pits that meet your project’s requirements whether that be a standard size pit or a custom made solution.

Read on to learn all about Civilcast’s Custom Electrical Pits.

What Are Electrical Pits?

Although they can be made from different materials including moulded plastic and polymer concrete,  heavy duty electrical pits are typically manufactured from concrete.  They’re used to house electrical cables and communications fixtures. These boxes or pits are structurally sound and can be custom-made to fit your project’s specific  requirements, though there are standard pre-fabricated sizes to choose from as well.

These pits usually feature bellmouths — pvc inserts in the structure designed to keep sharp edges away from cables inside. Standard pits feature a range of standard bellmouth options from 50mm -200mm.

Electrical Pits also require covers, which are made from cast iron and include concrete infill covers designed to be infilled with concrete or solid top covers that are robust and manufactured to withstand years of heavy work.   Both are available with encasements which are concrete surrounds providing a ready-to-use solution for faster completion.

The cover you require will need to conform to a Class and that Class will be dependent upon design and wheel loads and is subject to your project’s requirements.

Our Process

To ensure that you receive the exact Electrical Pit your project requires, our ordering process is a simple one. For standard sizing its as simple as calling our customer service team and placing an order for manufacture.  For non standard sizing, requiring a custom-made solution the process is a little different but just as simple:

Estimate and Drawing

First, you’re going to start by contacting our Estimating and Sales Team. They’ll be able to give you any necessary advice and answer any questions you have about your application and requirement.

If you require a custom-made solution, then you’ll need a shop drawing.  Shop drawings are produced typically after an order is placed. The shop drawing is going to cover both the concrete pit and bellmouth configuration of your custom-product. All custom electrical pits are shop drawn and are signed off by the client prior to manufacturing commencing.

Construction and Delivery

Once you’re happy with the shop drawing, Civilcast begins the manufacture of your custom made electrical pit.

Its important that the products you’re purchasing meet Australian Standards.  For your peace of mind all our products are manufactured in accordance with Australian Standards:

  • AS3500 – Plumbing & Drainage
  • AS3600 – Concrete Structures
  • AS3996 2019 – Access Covers & Grates

Finally, once your pit has been manufactured, we ensure that your product is delivered to your site, quickly and efficiently in keeping with your timeframes.

Things to Consider

Though our Estimating and Sales Team can help you come to the best product option, there are a few other things to consider before you order your electrical pits.

A big one is the bellmouth configuration.  While you can order standard electrical pits, there is not a standard bellmouth configuration – each configuration is different. We’ve manufactured custom electrical pits featuring multiple, complex bellmouth configurations that are likened to the appearance of swiss cheese.

The best thing to do is to talk to one of our in-house experts who can talk to you about your specific requirements.

Cover Material

The other thing to consider is the type and Class of electrical pit cover you’re going to require which will determined based on design and wheel loads and is subject to your project’s specific requirements.

It’s important to liaise with our team who can provide you with expert advice on our electrical pits and their application.
