Box Culverts

Box Culverts

Box Culverts or U-shaped precast concrete culverts are commonly used in civil engineering and civil construction projects across a variety of applications.  They are made from reinforced concrete and are designed to withstand heavy loads and resist corrosion, making them ideal for use in road and bridge construction, as well as in drainage and storage systems.  Box Culverts are also popular for use in underground utility tunnels where they provide a safe and durable housing for electrical cables, telecommunications lines and other services. Box Culverts offer an ideal solution for drainage culverts where standard concrete pipe products aren’t capable of maintaining, leveling and passing a given water flow rate effectively. Civilcast Precast Concrete Culverts are suitable for difficult site conditions and offer a quick and cost-effective structural solution for a wide range of applications.  The availability of base slabs and link slabs is also a useful feature that can assist with installation and provide added structural support. Inverted culverts with link slabs for electrical applications are also a useful application as they can offer protection for electrical cables and provide a stable base for their installation. Civilcast can offer a custom Box Culvert solution and we even have an in-house Design Team that can assist you with your project.

Benefits of Box Culverts

Civilcast Box culverts are ideal for are ideal for bridging flow crossings or where hydraulic head is limited. Box culverts can be configured to have less impact on upstream water levels and downstream flow velocities than equivalent pipe structures. Precast construction means that traffic may use the installation immediately after placing and back-filling whereas in-situ construction will require a period for curing prior to stripping forms ready for use. Due to their ability to tolerate heavy wheel loads even with no overfill in place, precast box culverts are superior to most alternative systems which require compacted overfill in place before loading is applied. Concrete Box Culverts can also be used for the following:

  • Highway culverts
  • Railroad culverts
  • Short-span highway bridges
  • Storm drains
  • Utility tunnels
  • Underground storm water detention/retention systems
  • Jacked or tunneled installations

What is a Culvert?

A culvert is a structure or arch used typically under roads, railways and runways as drainage culverts, underpasses or service ducts. . It may also function as a bridge for traffic to cross over it. Culverts are used to maintain a natural flow of water or to control the current flow. It is typically composed of pipes, boxes, and arches. The culvert type is determined by hydraulic, water surface height, roadway height, and other conditions. Concrete (reinforced) box culverts are the most common culverts that are found in both rural and urban areas.
